Not sure why some states are black and some are orange. There’s no key.
Starburst for TX? I’m okay with that. Circus peanuts? I worry about you, New Hampshire.

In my view, Starburst, Twizzlers, Skittles and Hot Tomales all suck.
Reeses peanut butter cups are the best!!!

Ohio big on “Blow” pops?
Story checks out. Iowa should be updated to “Heisenberg Blue Rock Candy” though...

This has been given me an idea for the scariest Halloween costume ever: show up saying “trick or treat” as mathematics. It’s sad, but lots of people are terrified of math.
It’d be interesting to see the ranking of different candies on an overall population basis as well. I’d guess either Reese’s Peanut Butter cups or Crunch Bars would be the top spot.

Using Google Trends, we determined which states were the most avid fans of each candy. We examined 50 different popular (and some infamously unpopular) candies, given us a range of candies that puts any grocery store shelf to shame.
Ok but how does this study differentiate favorite candy from favorite Halloween candy ?

Some of it is seasonal. Those that claim to like Peeps at Easter probably hate them the other 11 months of the year.

I’m going to say that orange are ‘chocolate based’ while the black is ‘candy based’

Payday? WTF?!
Sour patch kids, kit kats, star bursts, skittles, dum dum pops are good Halloween candy.
Circus peanuts aren’ t for everyone, but I love em :D Did you know it’s actually banana flavor.

Because peanuts should taste like bananas? I haven’t had one of those in probably 40 years.

That makes good sense, but the colors should be reversed.

Somebody else suggested that the orange candies are chocolate based, while the others are not. I think that is correct.

Halloween in TX can see temperatures well above 100F, so chocolates are always a risk. Nothing like going out after dark when temps are still in the triple digits and you curse your costume choices for how uncomfortable they are.

We’ve been in TX for 30 years, and I don’t think I remember any triple digit Halloweens. But mid 80s are pretty common.

Well stated.
Yeah, “Circus Peanuts in my treat bag means I’ll be back later for the “Trick” part!”
It’s a weird custom, actually— Society legitimizes extortion...

Also, fun fact, in Maryland where the favorite is Blow Pops, when I was in middle school, Blow Pops were so popular that kids would get their parents to buy them in bulk and sell them to other kids out their backpacks. And that was like 25 years ago. I'm old.

Where in Texas do you live? I live in the hottest city in the US, currently going through its hottest year on record, and there’s no chance it’ll be 100 on Halloween night, let alone well above 100, but we don’t have any humidity.
We did just have our eleventh 100 degree day in October, so it very well could reach 100 during the day, which still feels nice after this hellish summer with insane heat and no rain.
There are cacti dying all over Phoenix to give you an idea of how brutal this summer has been. I’ve lived in the two hottest cities in the US my whole life and have never seen that happen. We’ve also had two massive desert wildfires which is fairly apocalyptic.

Blue Razz(berry) was the new hotness in the 90s and commanded premium prices over all the other Blow Pop flavors in the Blow Pops sold out of kids backpacks market.

It’s always an empty threat these days.
It developed here, but came from elsewhere. Mostly driven by Celtic immigrants (Irish and Scottish, particularly), though it isn’t clear where some aspects came from. The custom as it exists today is less than 100 years old.

Need a little bit more info but it s ounds like this is just another one of these stupidly useless maps that doesn’t actually tell you anything. That is, I doubt it is actually showing the most popular candy in each state (and even if it were, you’d want to use sales data rather than Google Trends), but rather something like “the candy a state likes more disproportionately than other states”. I suspect an actual map of most purchased candies would only have a few top choices across the entire map (which admittedly isn’t very interesting, but neither is a map that claims to be a map of favorite candies and doesn’t tell you anything about that).
That is to say I think this is happening :

I would have to agree that their methodology is suspect, and the whole exercise is pointless. It does, however, generate clicks, and makes for a good conversation.

They called Indianans a bunch a dum dums. I never got the impression Kit Kat was the favorite in Hawaii. We do get the Japanese Kit Kats though. I personally can’t stop eating Smarties if you drop a bag in front of me, that shit is crack.

Original Sprees are my crack. I’ll eat the whole roll in one sitting. When I was younger, it was cherry Now & Laters. I would buy three packs of them and chain eat them till they were gone. I don’t think you can find them any more.

So I looked it up and it turns out that the hottest Halloween was 90F here in North Texas (but the highest low temperatures was 78F). There were a string of years while I was growing up and still trick or treating where the tempe ratures were in the mid 80's during the evening (I thought I remembered it being 100F, but that was probably the “heat index” or me just misremembering).
I have pictures from a Halloween where all the face paint I had on from a costume ran down my neck thanks to all the sweat.
![]() 10/17/2020 at 17:23 |

Gotcha. Yeah, anything close to 80 in a Halloween costume is sweat city.

New Hampshire likes circus peanuts? Really? Wow, my birth state has let me down once again. At least they didn’t say Blow Pops like those suckers in Maryland and Tennessee .
Overall though, I’m disappointed that no state chose correctly. Swedish Fish are the best, and there’s nothing anyone can say that will change my mind.
